Cesar Acosta’s Breakout Season

Cesar Acosta Has Taken a Major Step Forward in 2026

A year ago, Cesar Acosta's first season with the Yankees was ...a difficult one. The right-hander went 1-5 with a sky high 8.33 ERA and 1.88 WHIP over 31.1 innings in the Dominican Summer League. While he did strike out 37 batters, he struggled to consistently command his arsenal, walking 35 batters, allowing 24 hits and giving up three home runs.

Just one year later, Acosta looked like a completely different pitcher with some upside. What a difference a year makes for a Yankee pitching prospect.

4-1 | 3.31 ERA - 1.01 WHIP | 51.2 - 31 H, 21 BB, 70 K | 34.5 K% | .172 AVG

Through 51.2 innings in 2026, Acosta is 4-1 pitching to a 3.31 ERA with a 1.00 WHIP, while keeping hitters to a .172 average. He gave up 31 Hits with 21 Walks, while striking out 70 batters! A much different outlook from how he ended 2025.

The improvement in his command has been huge. Acosta issued 35 walks in 31.1 innings last season. This year, he saw his workload increase by 20+ Innings but cut his walks to 21. The Venenuelan also increased his strikeout total from 37 to 70, which lead the Dominican Summer League!.

Acosta wasn't simply missing more bats he's done a much better job of controlling the entire at-bat. That development was evident in July, when Acosta dominated the DSL. Where he pitched to a miniscule 0.90 ERA over 20 innings over work. He allowed just 8 hits and 6 walks while striking out 20. It was a sustained improvement that suggested this was more than a small hot streak.

The culmination of his season came on August 13, where Acosta delivered a dominant five-inning performance, allowing just two hits and one earned run while walking one and striking out a career-high 11 batters. Even more impressive, he threw 39 of his 45 pitches for strikes, showcasing the improved command that has been one of the defining characteristics of his 2026 season.

That performance earned Acosta DSL Player of the Week honors for August 10-16 and further cemented what has been an impressive breakout campaign.

Acosta finished the season as the strikeout leader in the Dominican Summer League, a remarkable accomplishment considering where he was just a year ago.

The strikeout total may be the headline, but his development goes well beyond missing bats. A season ago he ended the season with an 8.33 ERA, and this year he's down to 3.32. Acosta lowered his WHIP from 1.88 to 1.00, while dramatically limiting opposing hitters to a .171 batting average and allowing just 1 homerun.

For a young pitcher who struggled mightily with his command in 2025, Acosta has made significant strides in virtually every area that matters and will look to continue his development in the Florida Complex League in 2027.

Every Prospect. Every Level. Every Day.
