Fast Starts for Several FCL Bats

The FCL season has been underway for about three weeks and we’ve had some standout performers at the level that I wanted to briefly touch light on.

3B Richard Matic

Matic generated among the most buzz coming over from the DSL stateside and has lived up to expectations. The Dominican infielder in his age 18 season is hitting .302/.448/.377 for a .825 OPS with 4 doubles. While we haven’t seen the game power Matic is capable of displaying, he’s shown a remarkable eye at the plate as the leadoff hitter, walking as much as he’s struck out at 20.8% apiece.

OF Wilberson De Pena

The prospect acquired in the Oswald Peraza trade to the Angels, De Pena has made his mark thus far in his first full year in pinstripes. The 19 year-old outfielder is slashing .370/.433/.667 for a 1.100 OPS with 3 HR. The Dominican native possesses great power having hit a ball over 111 MPH off the bat and has managed to generate even more game power, increasing his ISO from .243 to .297 this season and it’s helped him to have a wRC+ over 160, having never surpassed 98 in prior years.

INF Leni Done

The 19 year-old infielder has turned heads in his first year stateside after having gone under the radar last year in the DSL. Done has put up a .353/.435/.529 slash for a .964 OPS. Done has showcased great bat to ball ability, as suggested by his high averaged, has a walk percentage in the double digits at 13.5%, while producing good power with a .176 ISO.

SS Dexters Peralta

Peralta was surprisingly promoted last year to the FCL as an 17 year-old and while he did face struggles, he’s more than risen to the occasion this year. The switch-hitting shortstop is slashing .227/.414/.500 for a .914 OPS with 3 HR. Peralta has had a massive power surge this season, increasing his ISO to .273 after never surpassing .107 and has already tied the most home runs he previously hit in a season, all while walking 22.8% of the time.

C Queni Pineda

The glove first catcher has had good production at the plate to begin the year. The backstop is hitting .220/.429/.366 for a .795 OPS with 2 HR. While his bat to ball skills haven’t reflected fully in his numbers yet, he’s performed more to his standards recently while continuing to show a fantastic eye walking 24% of the time.

Though there is plenty of season left, it’s always great when the next line of prospects performs well and hopefully they continue to perform well enough to earn promotions to the next level
